Traveling with Pets During the Holidays: Tips for a Smooth Journey

Featured

The holiday season often means travel, and for many pet owners that includes bringing Fido or Fluffy along for the ride. Traveling with pets can be enjoyable, but also stressful if you don't properly prepare. Follow these tips to ensure a smooth, safe journey with your furry companions.

Planning Ahead is Key

If driving, make sure your pet is comfortable in the car. Take them on short drives now to get them used to it. Look into pet-friendly hotels in advance and call to confirm policies. Check with your airline if flying, as many have restrictions on pets. Get an airline-compliant carrier early and help your pet get comfortable in it.

Update Your Pet's Tags and Microchip Info

Make sure your pet has an ID tag with your current phone number and address. Also ensure their microchip is registered and up-to-date. Consider temporary travel tags with your holiday destination address. Pack a recent photo of your pet in case they get lost.

Get Health Certificates

Contact your vet for health certificates or records required by airlines, states, hotels etc. Make sure your pet's vaccinations are all up to date. Ask your vet about motion sickness medication if car travel makes your pet nauseous or anxious.

Pack Smartly

Include food, bowls, litter and litter box, plastic bags, extra leash/collar, favorite toys, medication, pet first aid kit, paperwork, and ample water. Packing familiar items can help relieve stress. Purchase pet insurance in case of emergencies.

Practice Safe Travel

Use a secured carrier or crate in vehicles and avoid having pets in the bed of trucks. Never leave pets alone in cars. In hotels, keep pets in crates when unattended. Use leashes when walking and be mindful of busy roads. Place "Pet Inside" stickers on car windows in case of accidents.

Enjoy Quality Time Together

Schedule stops at pet-friendly parks/rest stops when driving. In new environments, spend time actively engaging with your pet and providing affection to keep them at ease. Build in downtime upon arriving at your holiday destination.

Proper preparation goes a long way in ensuring a relaxing, memorable trip with pets. Consider their needs during travel to keep your four-legged family members safe and content this holiday season. Let me know if you have any other pet travel questions!
